One down, two to go... Nov. 28th, 2007 @ 02:03 pm
[info]merry_smutmas fic completed and submitted!

now back to [info]smutty_claus and [info]snupin_santa!

By the way, if I can manage to get it uploaded...possibly published through GoogleDocs, is there any interest in a 2007 Holiday Fest Tracking Spreadsheet? Last year I listed, by order of posting, all the entries for [info]merry_smutmas, [info]smutty_claus, the [info]snupin_santa exchange at [info]lupin_snape, and [info]harry_holidays. The spreadsheet columns had date, title, link, fic/art, giftee, and pairing (my personal copy also has tracking/commenting columns, but you can easily add those yourself. I won't be tracking [info]harry_holidays this year, but I might add [info]snarry_holidays in its place...although I'll have to backtrack, as posting's already started there...

Anyway, anyone interested? I'm still figuring GoogleDocs out, but I think I can do my editing there and then publish a copy for people to download, or at least view online...

You are The Star

Hope, expectation, Bright promises.

The Star is one of the great cards of faith, dreams realised

The Star is a card that looks to the future. It does not predict any immediate or powerful change, but it does predict hope and healing. This card suggests clarity of vision, spiritual insight. And, most importantly, that unexpected help will be coming, with water to quench your thirst, with a guiding light to the future. They might say you're a dreamer, but you're not the only one.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

Hm. Well, that's certainly promising. :-)
» FIC: Far From the Tree - Chapter 7, SS/RL
Title: Far from the Tree, Part 7 of ?
Author: Chastity Pureheart, [info]chazpure
Rating: NC17 (fic overall; this chapter rated R for language and sexual situations)
Pairing: SS/RL
Word Count This Chapter: 2,500
Summary: Now that they've decided to make it official, Severus and Remus face one last, daunting task...meeting the parents.
Notes: For [info]ellid, who requested: Post-War. Remus and Severus take each other home to meet their respective families. Must be funny. Bonus if Tobias and Eileen are like Onslow and Daisy in "Keeping Up Appearances." For purposes of this story, I have assumed that the dark, hook-nosed man of occlumency lesson memory in OotP was not Tobias Snape. His identity was revealed in Chapter 3. Many thanks to my beloved [info]odogoddess for beta reading, contributing perfectly *evil* ideas.

Far from the Tree, Chapter 1 )
» Sewing Machines: 2 Chaz: 0
Sometimes the inanimate is trying to tell you something.

Sewing Machine Number 0ne, my trusty old friend that weighs about a ton and is older than I am, is currently inaccessible.

Sewing Machine Number Two only weighs half a ton and is about five years younger than I am. It started off fine, then began breaking the thread every six inches, despite twiddling of tensions, replacing of needles, bobbins and thread, and much cursing. That would have been bad enough, but then it started snarling the bobbin thread and making an unholy mess on the backside. Finally threw hands up in air and switched to Sewing Machine Number Three.

Sewing Machine Number Three is J's and is effectively brand new - it might have a couple hours of sewing on it. It's powder blue and cute and only weighs a few pounds. I had to resort to the manual to figure out how to thread it, but it purred as it ran and the fabric just slid under the foot like a dream. And then it started dropping stitches. WTF?

I managed to finish sewing the satin front assembly to the back with only minor episodes of swearing, but then I decided I really should pink the raw edges with the new pinking shears I'd picked up...

One hole in the back of my dress later...

I cussed and ranted and was about to bundle the 3/4 completed dress away, but J calmed me down a bit. It was getting very late, but I sat back down and finished pinking the seams, then set the satin aside and started to sew the lining front to the lining back.

And the machine started dropping stitches again.

Okay, maybe I can't take a hint, but I usually get clued in when hit by a bat.

So the dress project has been officially shelved. I'll finish it for the holidays, maybe. In the meantime, I unearthed a black evening gown and burnout velvet jacket that will be perfectly serviceable for tonight. :-)
» The side-front's connected to the side-back...
Dress update:

Done:

  • Pattern trimmed out and fitted

  • Satin and lining pieces cut

  • Front sewed to side fronts, satin and lining.

  • Back sewed together, satin and lining

  • Zipper installed

  • Back sewed to side back, satin and lining

To Do:
  • Sew front assembly to back assembly, satin and lining

  • Hem satin

  • Hem lining

  • Sew lining to satin

  • Front and back facings

  • Hook closure

Optional:
  • Bolero or shrug

Anticipated Sewing Time Remaining:
  • four hours

Will she make it in time?

Will the sewing machine combust or be thrown through the window?

Will the dress fit, or will our heroine make her appearance in a potato sack?

For answers to these and other thrilling questions, stay tuned to "As the Bobbin Turns"! Brought to you by Advil, Hennessey's, and the letters W, T, and F!

» Rambly bits and bobs
I've been meaning to post for ages, it seems but with one thing and another, I just haven't had the time. So here are a few rambly, disjointed notes and thoughts...

About the car... )

Formal Festivities )

State of the Fics )

I don't have the energy to say anything about the LJ kerfluffle right now, nor to go into my thoughts and feelings on DH, but I'll get to both of those at some point. I'll just say that I intend IJ to be my primary journal, but I'm still reading my flist on LJ as well, and will try to post links to my IJ posts on my LJ, for those friends who haven't yet migrated.

As for DH...well, like I said before the book came out, canon is closed now, and the Wizarding World is ours to play with. And JKR can't hurt "our" characters any longer. We can rescue them, revive them, awaken them from their nightmares, reboot the system and try a different way.

And just so you know...Severus Snape is alive and well and living in Southern California with two very affectionate-- er...and happy! ;-)
» And now for a squeeful pause...
I've been beyond busy, and haven't had time to post about the LJ cr*p, much less DH and my response to it, but I just had to post about this. I'm currently at a conference in hot, disgustingly muggy, overpriced beautiful, scenic Orlando, and today my colleague and I decided to blow off the last couple of sessions for the day, pile in the rental car, and drive about 50 miles...

TO WATCH THE SPACE SHUTTLE LAUNCH!!!!!

OMG, guys, I...

...there just aren't words. I'm an aerospace engineer by training and quasi-profession, and swear to God, I'm tearing up just thinking about it again.

The drive was a pain, with too many toll booths, inexact directions, and lots of idiots on the road, and when we got there we had to park and walk a fair piece in the blazing, sweltering humidity, and wait in line to buy tickets and then go find a place on the lawn to stand and wait in the sun with all the other tourists, and afterwards, it took us about 3 hours to drive back...

...AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT!

God, she was so beautiful! Endeavour is in orbit, expected to make rendezvous with the International Space Station on Friday.

And I watched her take off.

Incredible.

...now to go mirror this post on GJ and IJ and JF if I can find my login...
» SPOILERS - reaction to JKR interview
I'll have something more to say about DH, one of these days, but for now, having heard JKR's latest pronouncements, I'd just like to say...

Heh...apparently the meaning of my life is all about [info]reversathon, fanfics spiralling out of control, and the logistics involved when writing threesomes! Hee!
